LOGAN COUNTY CALF SCRAMBLE

About The

The Logan County Calf Scramble is the oldest calf scramble still operating in the state of Illinois. It has a rich history of providing young individuals with an opportunity to showcase their skills in raising and showing beef cattle. Our truly unique Catch-a-Calf program brings together the community to celebrate the tradition of beef production, showing livestock and agricultural heritage.

OUR MISSION

The Logan County Calf Scramble exists to empower youth through a hands-on annual catch-a-calf program that fosters personal growth, responsibility and leadership.

Our mission is to promote the development of our participants while cultivating life skills such as accountability, perseverance and confidence through animal husbandry. We strive to create a supportive and educational environment where these young livestock enthusiasts learn to excel as professional young men and women prepared to contribute to their communities and future endeavors.

LOGAN COUNTY CALF SCRAMBLE FAQ

GOT QUESTIONS?  We've got answers.

1

HOW DOES THE LOGAN COUNTY CALF SCRAMBLE WORK?

Every year up to 18 kids sign up to catch 9 FREE calves under the lights of the grandstand for a absolute thriller of an experience you must see to believe! The Catcher then raises the calf for a year and comes back and the following year to the Logan county fair to show it as a large calf !

2

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR THE CALF SCRAMBLE?

You must be older than 12, but not yet 18 by AUG 1st.

Ideal participants are from Central IL.
You must have a place keep the calf and financial means to feed i.

You are required to show it the following year at the Logan County Fair.

Ideally you are in a 4H, or able to sign up that year.

3

DO I HAVE TO BE A RESIDENT OF LOGAN COUNTY, IL?

No! We prefer Central IL, but surrounding counties are acceptable as well, we have had successful participants from Menard, Sangamon, Tazewell, Livingston counties and many others!

4

WHAT IS THE CATCHER/KID RESPONSIBLE TO PAY FOR?

We are blessed to have extremely generous Sponsors, Donors and Supporters! Once a calf is caught, you do not have to pay for it! (worth well of $1500!) However, all catchers are responsible to feed the calf for an entire year and that can get pricey (can be between $1000 - $2500)!

The Calf Scramble Association does reserve the right to take the calf from the participant if the participant is NOT feeding and caring for the calf appropriately.

5

WHAT ELSE AM I COMMITTING TO IF I PARTICIPATE?

A large animal beef project is EXTREMELY rewarding, but a TON of work.

HOW IS A WINNER SELECTED?

Judging for the scramble steers will be based on:

15% conformation

25% grooming

25% showmanship

35% records

HINT - Participants are JUDGED MORE ON THEIR RECORDS (in their own control) than anything else!

A well-qualified livestock judge, on scramble show night, selects the winners and rankings of conformation, grooming and showmanship.

The winner is also awarded $500!!

7

CAN I EAT / BUTCHER WHEN I AM DONE?

Yes! A great perk of this program and a rewarding feeling (sometimes also sad). Many participants book a butcher date with a local locker after the fair. Some even sell a 1/4 or 1/2 a beef to friends or neighbors!
